In 2022, La Niña drove the largest NASS revision in 13 years - 626,000 hectares of winter wheat abandoned between the June Acreage report and the eventual actual. NASS's June estimate hadn't yet absorbed the reality on the ground. Until then, the only reference is a trend baseline built on historical planting patterns. Across 5 walk-forward test seasons (2021–2025), that baseline scored 6.86% wMAPE at the US level. Treefera's blended forecast scored 3.28% over the same 45 weekly vintages — a 3.58 percentage point reduction. It beat the trend baseline at every one of those 45 vintages, from the October planting forecast through the July harvest update.
